Korea National Railway is a state-owned national rail infrastructure manager that led the transport revolution of Korea by seeing to the construction and opening of Gyeongbu High Speed Rail linking Seoul and Busan in 2004 followed by Honam HSR in 2015, Suseo HSR in 2016, and Wonju-Gangneung HSR in 2017.  At the same time, Korea National Railway has been leading improvement of transport services for the people and balanced national territorial development by seeing to quality construction and management of national railways that can be used by everyone conveniently and safely through continuous investments in technology and innovation.

Demonstrating leadership in railways, Korea National Railway stands at the forefront in building a rail-oriented public transport system for the future generation by continuing to expand on the current HSR network to cover more regions, upgrading speeds of conventional lines, and by adding more regional (commuter) lines to achieve 25% increase in total length of the national rail network by 2030, thus cutting travel times between regional hubs by 50%.  In addition, preparations are underway to build 400-km/h high speed rail and advancement of ultra-high speed rail technologies, we are promoting new businesses and new sources of income for the rail industry.

In keeping with the changing times that calls for railways to play a greater role as a means of public transport in response to climate change caused by global carbon emissions, Korea National Railway is updating standard emissions to its current situation and has achieved GHG reduction targets for 11 years in a row by placing priority on use of Grade 1 energy consumption/ energy efficient equipment and eco-friendly vehicles.  In this way, Korea National Railway will make every effort to build sustainable rail transport systems.
